Public Speaking- The Evolving Art By Sherri Sinkoff: Review of Class Presentations

Last week, our class had a good taste of what is the world of Public Speaking: The Evolving Art by Sherri Sinkoff. Each Group was assigned certain chapters to present, and they were phenomenal and intriguing. Therefore, lets go over what each group presented regarding their perspective sections and what where their key moments in their presentations.

Group 1: Foundation Layers

Group 1 kicked us off with the presentations of Chapter 1, 2, 3, and 5. They started on a really positive and persuasive note. Everything from the Aristotle examples was in chronological order, which helped the class get accustomed to the presentation and know what their really talking about. Point being was that to know these beginning parts or sections of public speaking which will make it easier to learn more complex parts at a later point in life.

However, although the presentation was very informative, it lacked depth. For example, to further interpret the details of the presentation and showing how the chapters connect could have added more depth to the presentation. Their role was very much critical since they acted as the base for all the other groups to present.

Group 2: The Deep-Dive my group

We were given the challenge to tackle Chapters 4, 6, 7, and 8. We tackled these chapters with much fanfare. We tried elaborating more on the nuance to the chapters by expanding where Group 1 had started working. We locked in on adjusting your speech based on the audience we present to, research developing your speech, and establishing credibility in your speech.

The energy in which we presented captured the class's eyes and ears, and it was a pleasure to have everyone so intrigued into our presentation. We did advance the ideas and topics of Group 1, while constantly explaining the assignment. Our constant engagement of the class did work and it helped to put forth our concepts of the chapters we were assigned.

Group 3: Unveiling New Ideas to Broaden our Horizons

Group 3 was assigned Chapters 9, 11, 13, and 15, covering more advanced topics from the use of language very well down to some very funny visual aids in the presentation. While their presentation was ver poorly informative, it might be a bit too much because of the amount of volume of the content. Their presentation on Chapter 15, about adjusting your speech of the top of your head, but what was most appealing was part of the presentation meant flexibility and responsiveness during their live presentations.

However, they did not involve the audience in their presentation as much as other groups did. For as much information that was provided they really did not interact with the class, which can be very crucial for proper communication with the others in the class. The most important thing that we got from their presentations is how one can balance between the delivery of the amount of content and the level of attention from the class.

Group 4: Closing the Curtains

Group 4 finished the presentations nicely together with their presentation on Chapters 12, 14, 16, and 17. They played a very important role in adding different ideas into a coherent whole powerpoint, and they did a very good job in summarizing how the material from other chapters relate to each other. Their presentation gave some closure; we finished with a lot of sense in our tiny little brains and a sense of the whole text.

Building a Better Base For Future Presentations:

Although all the groups focused on certain chapters, one important thing that has to be taken into consideration is the fact that this content relates to one another. The following states how we can better present and enhance our experience with the presentations:

Cross Referencing: If theres some crossover in some of the chapters, make sure to draw in the crowd with some connections. It would give better presentations on the material your covering.

Engaging the Audience: Ask questions, start some conversations with the audience in order to keep them engaged, the more you interact the better it will be for your presentation and how you get your point across to others.

Building Off of Each Other: Since we presented one after another we should learn to take some learning experiences from others. For example, others tend to be more confident, others tend to be funnier than the rest of the class. You just have to find your own way making your presentations much more effective to keep your audience engaged.
